Identifying and Supporting Dyslexic Students

Welcome! My name is Alexis Brooking and I am a qualified specialist dyslexia teacher and assessor. I provide full diagnostic assessments for children and adults in and around Bristol.

Why assess?

When your child is struggling with some aspects of learning in school it can be hard to know how to help them. A full assessment of their learning profile can be a brilliant place to start.

A dyslexia assessment will give you a clear and detailed understanding of your child’s learning strengths and weaknesses. Whether or not dyslexia is diagnosed, it will help you and their school give them effective, tailored support.

Where does it happen and how long does it take?

The assessment usually takes place in your own home. We just need a quiet table space. It takes around 2.5-3 hours and for younger children I recommend having two sessions, 1.5-2 hours each.

What happens during the assessment?

The assessment process is fun and empowering. Together we will complete a wide range of tasks all of which are set up for success and cut off when they get too tricky. The assessment looks specifically at:

  • Reading (including single words, non-word reading, comprehension, accuracy and fluency)

  • Spelling & Writing (including single words, free writing and handwriting speed and legibility)

  • Cognitive ability (including phonological processing and memory)

  • Underlying ability (verbal and non-verbal)

What happens after an assessment?

You will receive a full report usually within two weeks of completing the assessment. The assessment process will reveal a detailed learning profile of strengths and weaknesses that will be clearly explained. It will also include individualised recommendations for support both at home and in school.

What are your fees?

Full diagnostic assessment fee (from September 2023): £500

£50 deposit to secure a date. The final amount is to be paid on the day of the assessment. The report is sent within 14 days of cleared payment.

The fee includes:

  • An initial meeting to discuss the upcoming assessment (if you wish), a chance to meet and answer any questions you or your child might have.

  • One or two assessment sessions (as suits the child best)

  • A full report sent to you within 2 weeks; both paper (if you wish) and electronic copy.

  • A meeting to discuss the report (if you wish).

Testimonials

Alexis is the most gentle soul who can put any adult or child at ease. As a parent we fear for our children and getting an assessment done for my child was something I was anxious about. I did not want her to feel judged or incapable or even anxious herself, which would intern affect her confidence and ability. Alexis was a marvel, the assessment was relaxed and fun and in fact my daughter came away asking if we could meet Alexis and do the same thing every week! Not only are her assessments relaxed and thorough, she is extremely insightful and gave me the insights into my own daughter that I had perhaps overlooked. I highly recommend Alexis for anyone looking for Dyslexic assessments, whatever their age or background. Thank you Alexis for giving my daughter a light at the end of her tunnel.
