My name is Alexis Brooking and I am a qualified specialist dyslexia teacher and assessor. I provide full diagnostic assessments for children and adults in and around Bristol.
If your child is struggling with some aspects of learning in school it can be hard to know how to help them. An assessment of their learning profile is a brilliant place to start.
An assessment will give you a clear and detailed understanding of your child’s learning strengths and weaknesses. Whether or not dyslexia is diagnosed, it will help you and their school to give them effective, tailored support.
“School was a struggle for me, people just thought I was thick. I really needed someone to understand my strengths.”
Jamie Oliver
Where does it happen and how long does it last?
The assessment usually takes place in the assessors home in Bristol, BS7. It takes between 3-4 hours and for younger children I recommend having two sessions, 1.5-2 hours each.
What happens during the assessment?
The assessment process is fun and empowering. Together we will complete a wide range of tasks all of which are set up for success and cut off when they get too tricky. The assessment looks specifically at:
Reading (including single words, non-word reading, comprehension, accuracy and fluency)
Spelling & Writing (including single words, free writing and handwriting speed and legibility)
Cognitive ability (including phonological processing and memory)
Underlying ability (verbal and non-verbal)
What happens after an assessment?
You will receive a full report usually within two weeks of completing the assessment. The assessment process will reveal a detailed learning profile of strengths and weaknesses that will be clearly explained. It will also include individualised recommendations for support both at home and in school.
